  • Ukraine doesn’t have combatants using their hospitals as bunkers.

Hamas does use hospitals as bunkers for their combatants. This is actually a war crime. The reason it’s a war crime to station combatants in a hospital is because it makes the hospital a valid military target, which is bad for the civilian population.

But Hamas doesn’t give a shit about the civilian population and puts their combatants in hospitals anyway. The goal is propaganda so they can get donations and the people that only want to hear one side of the story aren’t going to care about “little details” about Hamas war crimes. The leaders of Hamas living in Qatar are actual billionaires because they’ve monetized the suffering of Palestinians. But then so has TikTok, and this intercept site linked above which is making emotional pleas to get in on the donation action.

Grifting off of Palestinian suffering is getting to be a big business now.

Also the system files aren’t really the most important files. While it’s a pain in the ass, you can reinstall your OS and get that all back again.

Reinstalling all of your games is going to take more time, and if you lost a save file, well you’re never getting that back. Personal photos, videos, etc. are even a bigger priority.

So I tend to to think of the drive /home is mounted on to be the “primary drive” as it’s the most important. The root is just the system files, needed for the OS, but not nearly as important as /home.

  • In addition to color being too expensive for textbooks, it was also too expensive for newspapers. And colour film was more expensive than black and white film. Since photos taken by photo journalists at the time were meant to be printed in newspapers in B&W, most photographers shot with B&W film even while the technology for colour photography existed.

the sentiment of black-and-white photography being the “true” way of documentation

Well… B&W does have better resolution, both back then and now. Notice how many photos from NASA probes are in B&W? It’s because to get color you either have to take three photos with filters on them and combine them together, which is what NASA does. Or have clusters of three different sensors in an array to pick up the different wavelengths, which is what most consumer cameras do. But that effectively cuts the resolution into a third of what it could be if you had sensors that simply detected light without caring about the wavelength.

Of course the way most cameras are constructed you don’t get any benefit from B&W in terms of resolution since the way the sensors are arrayed is optimized for colour. But NASA’s cameras allow for higher resolution B&W images (when they already know the colour of the thing they’re looking at and they want to see detail) and the filters are there when they need to figure out what colour something is.

  • Glass-Steagall was repealed by Bill Clinton. Which is the problem since it was regulations on banks which may have prevented the 2008 financial crisis had it been strengthened rather than repealed.

The reason why a new version of Glass-Steagall can’t be passed is because the GOP can fillibuster it in the Senate. And right now the GOP holds a slim majority in the House so it wouldn’t even be brought up for a vote, let alone get enough GOP votes to pass.

Same goes for Citizens United, and that one probably would need a majority in the Supreme Court as well. Maybe even a constitutional ammmendment. To get a majority in the Supreme Court they need to hold the Whitehouse and a majority of the Senate for long enough that the GOP Justices retire. To make a constitutional amendment they’d need to hold the Whitehouse, Congress, and a majority of the State Legislatures.

The fact that the GOP is leading the US towards fascism and you still can’t get off your high horse to vote against them makes you complicit in their fascism.

  • I saw an article about them attacking Lebanon now.

Hezbollah, not Lebanon. Please don’t legitimize terrorist groups by considering them to be the government of the country they operate in. Lebanon has elections, please support democracy and it’s not consider Hezbollah as Lebanon’s government, even if those psychopaths have control over a significant portion of the country.

That being said, Nasrallah is probably under significant pressure to do something to help Hamas in some way. Last week he put out some threats against Israel. Israel put out counter threats. In all likelihood that’s where things will stay, neither side wants a war with the other.

The media is always saying a war is imminent. Remember when they were claiming China was going to invade Taiwan any minute? There’s probably some outlets that’re still are saying that sometimes. It gets clicks, views, and ratings.

Who knows they might be right this time (a stopped clock is right twice a day) but it seems doubtful.

    So, where will it stop?

In terms of Gaza, Hamas is still holding Israeli hostages. It’s not going to stop as long as Hamas is holding Israelis hostage.

Hamas is likely making a lot of money from the suffering of Palestinians. So they don’t have much incentive to release the hostage and put an end to the conflict.

So it will continue on as the IDF goes house to house trying to find the people that Hamas took on October 7.

Eventually either the IDF will find all of the hostages or Hamas will release them. Then it will end.

  • I wouldn’t say it’s leftist, though there’s a lot of leftists here. Lemmy is more like how internet discussion boards used to be. There’s a lot of people with weird opinions on things, and there’s no Reddit Karma pushing people to conform to the consensus. So people are going to have weird takes on things, and there’s not 1000 comments upvoted above the weird ones, so you’re going to see comments like that. So reply to with you your weird opinions on those weird comments.

Welcome to the version internet that’s not pre-packaged and filtered to be bland!
