I still don’t think that changes my point, though - that a large AI model, particularly one that can scrape the whole web of any content it can find, then immediately be used to generate a practically infinite amount of content in seconds is very different to the idea of a little 8 year old in a library reading books then writing something himself.

And I still maintain that companies aren’t people and shouldn’t necessarily have the same rights as a person.

I get what you’re saying, but there’s something of a difference between someone studying something for months or years then writing about it, and a language model ran by one of the tech giants scraping media and immediately generating stuff from it, for commercial use, for the profit of the company that owns it.

It’s kinda like how plagiarising somebody’s book word for word never used to be a crime when it was a painstaking process of manually writing it back out for every copy. When the printing press came out, though? It allowed dodgy businesses to large-scale fuck over authors, and the law had to play catch-up.

I don’t actually think this proposal is that well thought out, but I also don’t think we should think of AI models or corporations as being people - they aren’t people, and they shouldn’t necessarily have the same rights and privileges that we do.

And for AMD’s 3D v-cache chips, there’s an enormous energy benefit, as taking stuff from the (much larger than usual) cache is far more energy efficient than constantly going back and forwards to RAM.

I was curious, so I looked it up.

iPhone 6 Plus frontal area: 158.1mm x 77.8mm = 12,300mm²

iPhone 15 frontal area: 147.6mm x 71.6mm = 10,568mm²

iPhone 15 Plus frontal area: 160.9mm x 77.8mm = 12,518mm²

So (TL;DR:) the 6 Plus is 16% larger than the current iPhone, and 1.75% smaller than the current Plus model.

In the past decade, phones haven’t actually got bigger, despite people online saying they have. Screens have, while the bezels have shrunk.

People mistakenly use screen size to measure the size of their devices, as opposed to the actual size.

People think 6.4"??? That’s huge! My old phone was only 5.2"!!, but once you factor in how much bezels have shrunk, the phones we have now are about the same as they were a decade ago.

I actually compared a 10 year old Samsung Galaxy S5 (2014) against the current model. The current model is 0.6% larger by frontal area. That’s it.

This to me sounds like an issue with hardware video decoding not working right and it falling back to software decoding on the CPU.

Depends how high end you want to go tbh. Of their current lineup I only have experience with the Xperia 5 series, and it was great. I believe the current gen is the Xperia 5 V (still the dumbest naming scheme I’ve ever heard…)

I’m not really treating it as a proper recommendation, though, because I’ve not seen any reviews or anything. This is based on a slightly older model I had as a work phone.

Sony phones are pretty great for stuff like this tbh

• MicroSD

• dual SIM

• headphone jacks (this is despite Sony being one of the biggest names in Bluetooth audio and therefore more likely to benefit from getting rid of 3.5mm)

• they stuck to notification LEDs longer than anybody (sadly stopped on their newest gen IIRC?

• dedicated 2-stage camera shutter buttons

• no notch, no hole punch

• stereo, front-facing speakers

• first to embrace water resistance on smartphones

• an OS that doesn’t treat you like a complete baby. It shows some relatively advanced options in the settings app and actually explains what they mean and why you’d want to use them. I appreciate that.

• shockingly FOSS friendly, even going as far as providing bootable AOSP builds on their GitHub, as well as contributing more to AOSP code than anybody other than Google themselves, despite being a niche OEM. A lot of the battery optimisations in Android are actually a Sony contribution, for example.

There’s a few things that suck. They need to extend their software support, their naming is dreadful (yes I know it follows the camera division naming, it’s still dumb), and they try to charge Apple/Samsung prices despite not being in the same dominant market position. But overall their Xperia division actually puts out some good stuff IMO.

Eh, I doubt many people are burning their own Blu-ray discs - this does not apply to discs you buy that already have films on, those are manufactured differently, and are still being made.

But even if you do archive your personal data onto Blu-ray discs, there are still other manufacturers besides Sony.

This really isn’t a big deal.

I think receiving 70% of the prices that you yourself set and deem acceptable is likely better than ?% of whatever PornHub or XHamster say they made from your video predominantly through ad revenue.

At the very least, it gives creators a great amount more control. In terms of setting prices, in terms of creating content they want to make as opposed to what a production company says, in terms of how you want to advertise, in terms of whether you want to lock your content behind a paid tier or not, etc.

And 30% is also pretty standard. Google, Apple, Valve, etc all charge 30%. Shit, on twitch it’s 50% IIRC. I’m not saying it’s perfect and couldn’t be cheaper, but it’s the usual market rate.

It’s definitely more ethical in that it allows the creators to get more of the money.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t issues. Clearly it doesn’t fix the whole issue of people under 18 sometimes making their way into the industry. It’s not a silver bullet that fixes an entire (sometimes problematic) industry.

I don’t know who was trying to tell you that OF solves everything about the porn industry, there would be no further issues, and that we’d live happily ever after, but that was obviously never going to be the case.

I had an update completely and permanently bricked my webcam, and another that fucked up my audio (but that eventually got fixed months later).

That all gets better due to having far more users. You can’t just say “let’s ignore adoption rate” - that’s a pretty huge deal. It’s by far and away the main thing that holds them back.

And again, they were fine with SMS, which is far far worse.

Some level of privacy, yes. Solely in WhatsApp-signal chats. And users can be notified of that, like they were with SMS.

But you know what the alternative is? Nobody using signal. And that’s objectively worse.

Cross-compatibility with WhatsApp would mean way more people on signal, and way more people willing to try, meaning more signal-signal chats. Meta would scrape metadata like when two accounts send messages and the like, but the contents of the chats would of course still be E2EE.

Signal-SMS is FAR less private, but they were fine with that for years, and people are still angry about it being removed.

Cross-compatibility removes the biggest hurdle for Signal - the chicken and egg problem of nobody using signal because they can’t talk to anyone. It would act as a Trojan horse for pushing signal-signal communication.

I’m a signal donor and while I disagree with your point regarding UI (have you used in the past couple of years? It’s went from feeling dated to feeling pretty modern), I agree with the rest.

Even worse, though, is that the EU offered them the opportunity to become relevant on a silver platter, by forcing WhatsApp to open up their app and be cross-platform with others who want to. Signal said no thanks.

I get it, WhatsApp stores metadata, and Signal doesn’t like that. But they were fine with (way way worse) SMS for a while? The day Signal chose that path was the day Signal willingly chose to be irrelevant for the vast vast vast majority of people.

I love this app but the way the project is managed baffles me sometimes.
