Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is reportedly banning Palestinians in the U.S. for life for calling relatives in GazaEnglish
8·1 year agoWrite down a list of the software you use (e.g. web browser, office suite, notepad, image viewer, video player, … ). Download Linux Mint from here and use Balena Etcher to write it into a pen drive. Switch off your computer, plug in the pen drive and switch on. DON’T INSTALL YET. Run Linux ‘live’ for a couple of hours, see if everything (speaker, printer, webcam, all the software you listed above) is working correctly.
Once you have confirmed that all is well, copy your files into an external hard drive, confirm that everything important has been backed up, and then install Linux from the pen drive. (You can have both Windows and Linux on the same computer, but then Windows should not be given internet access or it will ‘update’ and mess up everything. This can be repaired using, for example, this software, but why bother?)

World News@lemmy.ml•Saudis Warned G-7 Against Russia Seizures With Debt Sale Threat
22·1 year agoThey compete for oil buyers. And Russia is close to Iran. Pretty sure Saudi is acting out of self-interest here.

World News@lemmy.ml•Labour wins majority in UK General Elections as Tories lose two-thirds of seats
7·1 year agoThat’s a great wish list, but I’m not sure how many of those will happen. Increased NHS funding is sadly unlikely given your economy and xenophobia against immigrants. I’m hoping you get increased support for green energy, free school meals and rail nationalisation, and at least a modest raise in the minimum wage. Cheap, clean energy, educated and healthy children, and an affordable and reliable transport system can do so much for the economy.

World News@lemmy.ml•Labour wins majority in UK General Elections as Tories lose two-thirds of seats
39·1 year agoAmong smaller parties, the Liberal Democrats have gained over 60 seats, and Reform, the Greens and Plaid Cymru have also gained seats. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, now contesting as an independent, retained Islington North. Labour lost another three seats to independents who ran against its inaction on Palestine. The SNP and DUP suffered big losses, while Sinn Fein’s fortunes seem to have remained unchanged.

The usual suspects. Angry old men sending naive young (wo)men to die.

World News@lemmy.ml•US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris, undercutting environmental plan
11·1 year agoThe emissions saved from removing a few hundred ACs are negligible. But the message it sends to the millions watching the Olympics is significant. Which, again, is why I am hoping there will be at least some symbolic action against rule-breakers - it will start a conversation about the need to regulate / ban ACs.

By asking religious bodies to pay tax? Why do religious organisations get tax exemptions anyway?

World News@lemmy.ml•Iran to designate Canadian army as a terrorist entity
62·1 year agoI think they’re trolling. In reality, it could mean they have a justification to attack / sieze any Canadian ships that stray into the Persian Gulf. But that would be a pretty huge provocation, so it’s unlikely.

World News@lemmy.ml•US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris, undercutting environmental plan
12·1 year agoACs are not being provided to reduce emissions. Everyone is being asked to accept an equal handicap, so that the world does not become even hotter in the coming years. It’s largely symbolic, I agree, but I suppose kicking out a team that prioritises its medal tally over the climate crisis would send an even stronger signal.
