Someone once told me, “we’re not bad people trying to be good… we’re sick people trying to get well.”

It’s a slight, but meaningful reframing.

We’re all sick. The natural human condition is like cancer. It has a need to feed. It always wants more. A bigger house. A smaller waist. Less work. More play.

Our nature is devoid of satisfaction, like that of a wild animal. That’s our brain working in full force to fulfill its purpose of keeping us alive, fed, comfortable and procreating, regardless of the consequences. Our brain is a part of the flesh that must be denied to reach any level of spiritual health.

Well vs. good. The words we choose, matter.
