Let’s not pretend it was just Reddit. The man literally got a shout-out in Star Trek. He had a lot of people fooled.

Starmer’s Labour probably won’t be much better. I’d say that we got rid of populists and replaced them with centrists. Labour definitely aren’t a leftist party, although to American standards they probably are.
A few years ago, when the UK was proposing a trade deal with the US, one of the biggest concerns being passed was around the shockingly low standards for US meat, particularly chlorinated chicken.
Some of what we were told was absolutely shocking, and it amazes me that the US are happy with these standards in their food. Any notion of lowering these standards is absolutely insane to me.
Lol have you ever tried to report abuse on Facebook or Instagram?
They won’t do shit about obvious racist abuse or hate speech. Let them define what they want, they will do what they always do - nothing.
They’re worth it when it’s a sanctioned display, and they’ve spent enough money to make it worthwhile.
I’ll never understand why people set them off in their own garden. Fireworks aren’t cheap, and unless you spend some proper money you’re basically just setting off fireworks for a dick-swinging contest with your neighbourhood.
The problem the Republican party seems to have right now is that it’s caught in a bizarre cult of personality, where the only viable candidate is Donald Trump. Eight years have been dedicated to a man that likely won’t be around for another eight due to his age and lifestyle. Donald Trump can’t drop out, because to many he IS the Republican Party.
Put succinctly, if Trump were to drop out, could you realistically see him backing another candidate, without making it about himself?
In some ways it’s petrifying that Trump could win. In another, it’s hilarious to think that IF Trump were to lose, how would the Republicans recover in four years? Trump will never not make it about himself, and I bet he’ll put himself on the ballot for as long as he can, further eroding the right.
Wasn’t this always the angle, even when people called his age out last election? The argument was that Kamala Harris would step up, and that Biden didn’t want a second term.
Given Harris’ recent comments in the press regarding stuff she’d fix “if given power”, I wonder if she’s even on the VP card this time around? IMO, AOC might be a smarter choice for VP, since the left love her and the right loathe her. She’d bring a lot of younger disenfranchised people back around, and that might be enough.
Not American, so excuse the silly question.
What is stopping the President from dissolving the Supreme Court?
I think the “underpaid teacher” thing isn’t necessarily rooted in reality,. especially outside of the US. My wife is a teacher in the UK, and she’s a head of her subject. For many years her pay was similar to mine as a software engineer, but everyone often treated her as if she was poor and that I was rich.
A lot of people are giving Tesla shit here, but surely there should be regulations in place to ensure something like this isn’t allowed to be released for public use?
All of big tech is really worried about this.
If the AI boom is a dud, I can see many of these companies reducing their output further. If someone comes along and competes in their primary offering, there’s a real concern that they’ll lose ground in ways that were unthinkable mere years ago. Someone could legitimately challenge Google on search right now, and someone could build a cheap shop that doesn’t sell Chinese tat and uses local suppliers to compete with Amazon. Tech really shat the bed during the last economic downturn.
I work in AI as a software engineer. Many of my peers have PhD’s, and have sunk a lot of research into their field. I know probably more than the average techie, but in the grand scheme of things I know fuck all. Hell, if you were to ask the scientists I work with if they “know AI” they’ll probably just say “yeah, a little”.
Working in AI has exposed me to so much bullshit, whether it’s job offers for obvious scams that’ll never work, or for “visionaries” that work for consultancies that know as little about AI as the next person, but market themselves as AI experts. One guy had the fucking cheek to send me a message on LinkedIn to say “I see you work in AI, I’m hosting a webinar, maybe you’ll learn something”.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of cool stuff out there, and some companies are doing some legitimately cool stuff, but the actual use-cases for these tools where they won’t just be productivity enhancers/tools is low at best. I fully support this guy’s efforts to piledrive people, and will gladly lend him my sword.
My dream is an “internet archive” for all video games, modded to run offline. If the game becomes unavailable for purchase, the archive opens that game and makes it available for all.
The next step is for this kind of release to become law, and supported by manufacturers.
It’s weird, because in many ways he could’ve been viewed as a champion of the left. He owns one of the largest brands in “sustainable” travel, owns a space company, and has money to burn.
I think he probably had a mental breakdown a few years ago, and that what we’ve seen is from him is basically untreated mental illness, exacerbated by being pals with the likes of Rogan and Chappelle, two guys that can handle fame and not give a fuck.
But things could’ve been very different if he weren’t such a cunt.
I say this as someone that uses FOSS day to day for work, I don’t really give a shit if my Lemmy app is FOSS.
For me, Sync was Reddit. It’s where 99% of my interaction with Reddit happened. I don’t really give a shit about Lemmy or the fediverse either. I’m here because Sync is a seamless product that gave me the best interface.
Despite saying that I don’t care about Lemmy or other distributed servers, Sync is basically that sync (lol) for me. Once I map my old subreddits on Lemmy, the experience doesn’t change.
My own personal opinion of him is that he’s a shrewd businessman in a world that prefers businessmen over creators. The second the public eye shifted to him he clearly had some mental episode that has only been heightened by drug use and being egged-on by the alt-right and social commentators like Rogan. Ironically, he’s become a creator, but his content is the actions of a broken billionaire lashing out.
