No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How many views does a Netflix show need to have to be considered a success?
24·1 year agoNo one really knows other than Netflix execs. A lot has to do with the cost of the show per viewer. It’s why HBO/Discovery is filling up with reality programming (cheap to produce). You can have a great show and it can end up in the top ten, but if it costs too much to make then the network has to figure out if production costs can be cut. Or if costs can be offset by product placement.
Streamers shifting to ad-based plans also changes things. You can now have a premium program that’s a “loss leader” if it brings in enough subscriptions that also watch the cheap programming and existing back catalog. The additional eyeballs on ads means more cash intake for the network which balances out the more expensive shows.
It’s a fun theory, but weren’t dishes and other artifacts stamped or embossed with “Titanic” recovered from the wreck?

Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix Starts Booting Subscribers Off Cheapest Basic Ads-Free PlanEnglish
5·1 year agoEmerging markets pay around $6 a month for Netflix. Basically the “password crackdown” markets are subsidizing the new subscriptions where Netflix is trying to gain a foothold. It’s the typical “get ‘em hooked, then start raising prices.”

Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix Starts Booting Subscribers Off Cheapest Basic Ads-Free PlanEnglish
7·1 year agoDo you have any data that shows Netflix didn’t lose subscribers in markets where they cracked down on password sharing? I keep seeing people saying this is the case, but all the news stories I’ve read say that Netflix is only adding subscribers in the cheaper markets (like India and South America).
